I Love Kentucky Mountains (and Valleys, too)

Fucking Ugly

Monday’s Courier-Journal featured an excellent piece on the expansion of the Thunder Ridge coal mine, near Hyden in Leslie County (near Hazard). Part of the excellence of the piece is its elaboration on the issues of mountaintop removal, which still seems, despite a fair amount of publicity recently, a relatively remote issue to most Kentuckians. Fortunately, as mentioned in the C-J‘s article, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth is holding a rally entitled I Love Mountains at the state capitol in Frankfort on Thursday, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Additionally, KFTC will hold a post-rally Old-Time Music Showcase featuring the Blind Corn Liquor Pickers, Clack Mountain String Band, John Haywood and Ponty’s Camper, Red State Ramblers, and Kentucky Author Maurice Manning at Al’s Bar in Lexington at 5 pm, all for $3. Unfortunately, I can’t make either event because of work, so if you’re stuck in the same boat as me, check out ilovemountains.org for more basic info on the issue (please note: ilovemountains.org is not affiliated with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth).
